Henderson’s Restaurant brings 50 years of family recipes to the table
For over 50 years the Henderson family has been serving up catfish to the residents of Newton County.
Today three-generations of the Henderson family can be found working at the family’s restaurant on Ga. Highway 36.
The family’s restaurant first opened its doors on Emory Street in 1948 across from what is today the Covington City Hall. Back then, says Frances Henderson (who opened the restaurant with her husband Clarence), the restaurant had only four booths and four tables and was called The Annex.
By 1956 business had grown so that Clarence made the decision to re-locate the restaurant to Ga. Highway 36 and to rename it Henderson’s Restaurant. Over time the restaurant continued to expand, adding more rooms until it reached its current capacity of 300 people.
As the restaurant grew, so did the Henderson family who all came to eventually work in the family business.
Frances’ daughter Clarice Dozier has worked at the restaurant since she was 11years-old.
“To me it’s just like home,” Dozier said. “I’ve always been here.”
All five of the Henderson’s children have worked at the restaurant and so have most of the Henderson’s grandchildren.
“I enjoy the people here,” said Frances’ granddaughter Jessica Robertson. “The same people come in each week.”
While Henderson’s is famous for its catfish (a plate with three fish and three sides is $10.50), the restaurant features an array of seafood options such as flounder fillet, fried oysters, perch and popcorn shrimp. Chicken, barbecue pork, steak and hamburgers are also offered.
Henderson’s features nightly specials such as the Wednesday night special where for $4.50 patrons can enjoy one meat item, two vegetables, salad and bread. The Sunday night special for $6.95 features one meat, three veg- etables, bread and dessert.
Banquet rooms can be reserved for private parties. Take out is available.
