Ver­i­zon do­nates $5,000 to New­ton READS

Money to help fund mo­bile com­puter learn­ing lab­o­ra­tory

Ver­i­zon Cor­po­ra­tion re­cently do­nated $ 5,000 to New­ton READS, a lo­cal adult lit­er­acy and GED coun­sel­ing pro­gram, so the or­ga­ni­za­tion can cre­ate a mo­bile com­puter learn­ing lab­o­ra­tory.

The grant money will go to­ward the pur­chase of five lap­top com­put­ers and lit­er­acy soft­ware pack­ages. They are be­ing used at five lit­er­acy sites cur­rently, in­clud­ing two new sites re­cently es­tab­lished at Early Hope Bap­tist Church and Mace­do­nia Bap­tist Church.

New­ton READS Di­rec­tor Janet Hodges said the lab al­lows the or­ga­ni­za­tion to ex­tend its reach in New­ton County and serve more res­i­dents.

“ Our clients en­joy us­ing the com­puter lab, and we have found the lit­er­acy soft­ware highly ef­fec­tive when used with the guid­ance of our vol­un­teer tu­tors,” Hodg- es said. “ We are ex­tremely grate­ful to Ver­i­zon and our lo­cal donors for their con­tin­u­ing, gen­er­ous sup­port of adult lit­er­acy in New­ton County.”
