GSWCC funds still avail­able for cost share as­sis­tance

The Ge­or­gia Soil and Wa­ter Con­ser­va­tion Com­mis­sion would like to in­form the pub­lic that there are still funds avail­able for cost share as­sis­tance for agri­cul­tural op­er­a­tions in sec­tions of Morgan, New­ton, Jasper, Put­nam and Wal­ton Coun­ties.

The Lit­tle River 319 Project is a fed­eral grant to in­stall Best Man­age­ment Prac­tices in the Lit­tle River wa­ter­shed. This wa­ter­shed area is west of High­way 441 from Ea­ton­ton to Madi­son, east/ north of High­way 142 from Ea­ton­ton to High­way 11 in New­ton County, then east of High­way 11 from the Pony Ex­press area to So­cial Cir­cle. The north­ern bound­ary is the Dixie High­way from Madi­son to So­cial Cir­cle. Par­tic­i­pat­ing op­er­a­tions must have a 20- an­i­mal unit min­i­mum.

Prac­tices avail­able for beef, dairy and equine op­er­a­tions are live­stock ex­clu­sion fenc­ing to pre­vent ac­cess to streams and ponds, wells and wa­ter troughs to pro­vide al­ter­na­tive wa­ter, cross fenc­ing, pas­ture im­prove­ment, stream cross­ings and wa­ter­ing ramps.

Dairy op­er­a­tions can also re­ceive cost share as­sis­tance on la­goon pump outs and solid waste sep­a­ra­tors. Poul­try op­er­a­tions can re­ceive as­sis­tance for poul­try lit­ter stack houses, com­posters and in­cin­er­a­tors. Con­tracts will be re­im­bursed at a rate of 60 per­cent of av­er­age cost, with higher rates for ex­clu­sion fenc­ing based on dis­tance from the stream or pond. A dis­tance of 15 feet will re­ceive a 60 per­cent cost share, 30 feet will re­ceive 80 per­cent, and 60 feet will re­ceive 100 per­cent cost share.
