The Covington News - - NEWTON @ PLAY - By Rachel Oswald

The Community Band will have its first practice of the season on Sept. 10 and is looking for new members.

The band, formed by adults from Newton County and the surrounding areas, has weekly practices Monday nights in the band room of Eastside High School. Practices begin at 7 p. m. and last for two hours.

Founder and Director of the Community Band T. K. Adams said the band will have five performances during its 2007- 2008 season including a Christmas concert, a spring concert and a Fourth of July concert.

There will also be several smaller concerts throughout the year at local schools and community centers. There are no auditions or fees to join the Community Band Adams said.

“ We’re just having a good time and enjoying each other,” said Adams, a retired band director from Cousins Middle School.

Adams said the band will first begin practicing pieces for the Christmas concert in December. The Community Band also plays Big Band music, overtures from popular movies and musicals and pop selections.

Since Adams began the band in 1993, it has grown to include approximately 50 members today. Ages range in the band, said Adams, with its oldest member, a violinist, coming in at 78. High school seniors who are in good standing with their own school bands may also join the Community Band. Many members of the Community Band have been there since the band was first founded.

“About a half of the players are the ones that started with me,” Adams said. “ They’re still there.”

The Community Band has open rehearsals, but Adams said it is better to call ahead so that he will know to have enough sheet music to go around.

“ We are always looking for new ones to come in,” Adams said. “ They are always welcome.”
