More violent dog attacks reported

Man guns down pit bull in yard

The Covington News - - FRONT PAGE - By Tyler Smith

Days before an Oxford woman was mauled by a pit bull- boxer mix, a Covington man was cornered by a pack of aggressive pit bulls in his yard.

Sullivan Bailey, 50, was in his front yard on 70 Trelawney Court Sunday when three pit bulls entered his yard. Bailey told Newton County Sheriff’s Deputy Terry Rogers the gray pit bull charged while he was cleaning his car in the driveway.

The dog reportedly backed him into his garage where he was able to shut himself inside. Bailey grabbed his gun and went back outside where he found the gray pit bull near the kennel that houses his own dogs.

The pit bull charged Bailey again and he shot and killed the dog. No charges were filed against Bailey.

In another case of an aggressive dog, a young child was attacked by a neighbors shar pei Thursday afternoon.

The little girl was invited by her friend to the friend’s house on Mills Drive. Once inside the house, the friend opened a bedroom door which allowed the small dog out. The shar pei bit the little girl in several places on her legs and ankles.

Newton County Animal Control was notified and the dog was confiscated. The girl was not badly wounded.
