New­ton var­sity cheer cap­tains

They are on the side­lines at ev­ery big game, wear­ing brightly col­ored rib­bons and beam­ing smiles. At half­time they keep the crowd pumped by climb­ing on top of each other and soar­ing into the air.

They are cheer­lead­ers, and their school spirit is es­sen­tial to ev­ery sport on the court and es­pe­cially on the field.

Meet the 2007-08 New­ton High School var­sity cheer co­cap­tains: Tif­fany Smith Age: 17 (se­nior) Col­lege plans: study nurs­ing at the Univer­sity of West Ge­or­gia Cheer­ing since: recre­ational league at the age of 5 Fa­vorite stunt: jumps Most dif­fi­cult: be­ing a base in a com­pli­cated pyra­mid for­ma­tion Fa­vorite cheer: “We’re jam­min’ with the Blue and White” Pre­pares for a game by: just re­lax­ing and sit­ting and talk­ing with friends Best part of cheer­ing: peo­ple you meet What she’ll re­mem­ber most: “I’ll re­mem­ber the coaches,” Smith said. “They’re al­ways there for you.” Ashleigh Wil­liamson Age: 17 (se­nior) Col­lege plans: study medicine start­ing at Ge­or­gia Perime­ter Col­lege and later trans­fer­ring to Ge­or­gia State Cheer­ing since: recre­ational league at the age of 5 Fa­vorite stunt: be­ing the flyer in a three-man for­ma­tion and do­ing a twist or scor­pion Most dif­fi­cult: jumps Fa­vorite cheer: “Rock with the White, Roll with the Blue” Pre­pares for game by: dec­o­rat­ing friends car an­ten­nae with blue and white rib­bons Best part of cheer­ing: games and sup­port­ing the teams What she’ll re­mem­ber most: “Just hav­ing a good time on a Fri­day night.”
