Vol­un­teer coaches still needed

The 2007 Cov­ing­ton YMCA flag foot­ball sea­son has al­most ar­rived.

Dead­line for signups is Septem­ber 16. Vol­un­teer coaches are still needed.

Play­ers will learn the fun­da­men­tals of the game, in­clud­ing the value of team­work and fair play, while im­prov­ing their skills.

Par­tic­i­pants must be at least four years old and no older than 13. Rules state that ev­ery child must play at least half of each game.

The mem­ber rate is $65, while non-mem­ber rates are $75 per player. Fi­nan­cial as­sis­tance is avail­able. Game jer­seys are pro­vided by the YMCA.

Prac­tices be­gin on or af­ter

8 a.m. on Septem­ber 8 at the Cov­ing­ton Po­lice De­part­ment.

The race in­cludes two events, start­ing with the “Fun Run” at 8 a.m. fol­lowed by the 5K at 8:30 a.m. In fact, it has been voted best 5K in Ge­or­gia for the past four years.

There are 16 dif­fer­ent age groups, giv­ing each run­ner an equal op­por­tu­nity.

Each par­tic­i­pant will re­ceive a top qual­ity short sleeve race shirt (guar­an­teed to pre-reg­is­tered run­ners only).

Pro­ceeds from the race will ben­e­fit the “Po­lice Who Care” fund.

The Lady Ea­gles are 2-5 over­all this sea­son. Their next match is against Dac­ula at noon on Septem­ber 8.

GOLF B.C. Crow­ell Schol­ar­ship Tour­na­ment an­nounced

The 2007 B.C. Crow­ell Schol­ar­ship Golf Tour­na­ment will be held at 10 a.m. Septem­ber 21 at the Oaks Golf Course.

Golfers from New­ton County and sur­round­ing ar­eas are in­vited to par­tic­i­pate in the tour­na­ment.

Three schol­ar­ships of $1,000 each will be awarded to a stu­dent from each of the lo­cal high schools — Al­covy, East­side and New­ton. The schol­ar­ship fund has a lo­cal board and is ad­min­is­tered by The Com­mu­nity Foun­da­tion.

The event is cur­rently ac­cept­ing spon­sor­ships, which will not only pro­vide com­pa­nies with an eco­nom­i­cal ve­hi­cle for ad­ver­tis­ing but also sup­port the on-go­ing com­mit­ment to the ed­u­ca­tion of the youth in New­ton County.

For a con­tri­bu­tion of $100 that is tax de­ductible, the New­ton Re­cre­ation Com­mis­sion will make a sign with the com­pany’s name or in­di­vid­ual’s name. The sign will be placed on a green at the Oaks Golf Course. To spon­sor a team of two, the fee is $150.

The reg­is­tra­tion cost is $150 per team (two-man scram­ble). It in­cludes a cart, greens fee, lunch and prizes.
