‘Grandpa ban­dit’ a Cov­ing­ton man

Phillips re­port­edly robbed four banks in two states

The “Grandpa Ban­dit” who al­legedly robbed the First Ge­or­gia Com­mu­nity Bank in Septem­ber has been iden­ti­fied as Bobby Joe Phillips.

Ac­cord­ing to an of­fi­cial re­lease by the FBI, Phillips, 69, of Cov­ing­ton, re­port­edly robbed three other banks in Ge­or­gia and Ten­nessee. The Cov­ing­ton bank was re­port­edly the first stop of Phillips crime spree, which con­tin­ued with a rob­bery of The First Ten­nessee Bank in Knoxville, Tenn., on Oct. 1, and again on Oct. 12; the Sun Trust Bank in Suwa­nee on Oct. 24; and Ten­nessee Mem­bers First Fed­eral Credit Union in Knoxville on Nov. 1

A war­rant was is­sued for Phillips ar­rest Fri­day from the Knoxville branch of the FBI.

I n each of the rob­beries, Phillips a l l egedly pre­sented a note to the teller de­mand­ing money.

The FBI de­scribed Phillips as be­ing about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and about 170 pounds. He has gray hair, blue eyes and wears glasses. He also has tat­toos on his fore­arms and is be­lieved to be driv­ing a red, 2003 Chevro­let S- 10 truck.

The First Ge­or­gia Com­mu­nity Bank was robbed for a sec­ond time Mon­day af­ter­noon, but Phillips is not sus­pected in the case.
