First New­ton County prep swim­mers com­pete

Ell­wanger and Chavis each make state qual­i­fy­ing times

East­side swim­mers Drew Ell­wanger and Ni­jyl Chavis com­peted in their first high school meet on Nov. 13.

Both com­peti­tors made the state cham­pi­onship qual­i­fy­ing times in the 100-yard breast­stroke. Ell­wanger recorded a 1:00.79, while Chavis fin­ished at 1:05.53. (State time is 1:08.5.)

In ad­di­tion, Ell­wanger also qual­i­fied in the 200-me­ter IM with a time of 2:09.30.

It should be noted that Ell­wanger and Chavis are the first high school com­pet­i­tive swim­mers to rep­re­sent New­ton County.

Their next swim meet will be held Dec. 1 at John­son Park.


Cougars face Fal­cons to­day in foot­ball

The 2007 Turkey Bowl Clas­sic III will con­tinue at 2:30 p.m. to­day fea­tur­ing the GCC Cougars against the Henry Fal­cons at Avalon Park in McDonough.

The di­vi­sion is mid­dle school eighth grade foot­ball. The head coach of the Cougars is Sylvester Elkins.

Fif­teen play­ers rep­re­sent Grif­fin, while four are from Cony­ers and four are from Cov­ing­ton. One player rep­re­sents Hamp­ton, while an­other is from Stock­bridge.

At 2:30 p.m. Satur­day the Cougars will do bat­tle against the Ma­con Ti­tans.

NEW­TON RE­CRE­ATION Up­com­ing camp pro­grams

The New­ton County Re­cre­ation Com­mis­sion has sev­eral up­com­ing camp pro­grams, which will all be held at the Turner Lake Com­plex.

The daily ac­tiv­i­ties will oc­cur dur­ing the week-long school hol­i­days for ages 6-12. Each camp be­gins at 8 a.m. and lasts un­til 6 p.m.

The Christ­mas camp is the next pro­gram, which will be held De­cem­ber 17-21. The mid-win­ter camp is Fe­bru­ary 18-22, while the spring break camp is April 7-11.

Each weekly camp costs $65 per child and is lim­ited to the first 100 reg­is­tered chil­dren.
