71-year-old man beaten and robbed

Lo­cal law en­force­ment agen­cies had a busy hol­i­day week­end with a del­uge of calls in­clud­ing a rob­bery, a traf­fic fa­tal­ity and sev­eral other thefts.

“ Call vol­ume was pretty steady,” said Bill Wat­ter­son, a lieu­tenant at the New­ton County Sher­iff ’s Of­fice. “Most of the crimes oc­curred out­side of our nor­mal busy times.”

That would in­clude when three men re­port­edly robbed and beat an el­derly man out­side his home on Ga. High­way 212 Satur­day af­ter­noon.

Wat­ter­son said the three white sus­pects knocked on the vic­tim’s door at about 1:30 p.m. and asked him if had seen their dog.

The young men, who were all wear­ing ban­dan­nas on the lower halves of their faces, then re­port­edly struck the 71- year- old vic­tim’s head. While the vic­tim was on the ground, the rob­bers took $ 3,000 from the man’s pocket be­fore run­ning around the right side of the home flee­ing the scene.

Wat­ter­son said the in­ves­ti­ga­tion is still on­go­ing.

On Thanks­giv­ing Day, Greg Dur­dan was killed in au­to­mo­bile ac­ci­dent Wat­ter­son said Dur­dan, of Mansfield, crossed into the east­bound lane while driv­ing down County Line Road and col­lided head- on with an­other ve­hi­cle.

He was trans­ported to New­ton Med­i­cal Cen­ter where he was later pro­nounced dead. Wat­ter­son said the driver of the other au­to­mo­bile was not in­jured in the crash.

The case has been turned over to the Ge­or­gia State Pa­trol.

The NCSO and the Cov­ing­ton Po­lice De­part­ment also had sev­eral calls for stolen prop­erty over the long week­end. Items stolen in­cluded sev­eral firearms, au­to­mo­biles and mer­chan­dise from sev­eral stores in­clud­ing Too Unique & Com­pany.

Thirty run­way light globes worth a com­bined $ 1,650 were also stolen from the Cov­ing­ton Mu­nic­i­pal Air­port. The lights were used to di­rect planes to the proper run­way. Of the lights stolen 12 were red/ green globes worth $ 840, 10 were blue globes worth $ 450 and eight were clear globes worth $ 360.
