Re­tired beau­ti­cian Ruby Broughton got her busi­ness start on the sec­ond floor of a build­ing on the cor­ner of Hen­dricks and Wash­ing­ton streets in 1939. the two-story build­ing thrived with black-owned busi­nesses: a restau­rant, gro­cery store, doc­tor’s of­fice, an in­sur­ance agent and J.F. nelson’s funeral par­lor.
