The New­ton County Re­cre­ation Com­mis­sion is cur­rently seek­ing ad­ver­tis­ers, spon­sors and vol­un­teer help for the up­com­ing 2008 Dixie Boys World Se­ries (13-14 year olds).

This event, which is the largest spec­ta­cle of the year, will fea­ture 12 teams com­pet­ing for the world cham­pi­onship Au­gust 1-7 at City Pond Com­plex.

In ad­di­tion, the re­cre­ation de­part­ment has 25 other out­side tour­na­ments booked for this year.

BASE­BALL Lo­cal qual­i­fier tour­na­ment

The Cov­ing­ton travel base­ball teams will be com­pet­ing in the USSSA Qual­i­fier Base­ball Tour­na­ment called the “Spring Train­ing Bash” this week­end at Criswell Park in Mon­roe.

The four squads in­clude the Ge­or­gia Wrath (9 and un­der), the Cov­ing­ton Catch (10 and un­der), the New­ton Knights (11 and un­der) and the New­ton County Tigers (12 and un­der).

GOLF Cham­ber host­ing 14th an­nual tour­na­ment

The Cov­ing­ton/New­ton Coun-

ty Cham­ber of Com­merce 14th An­nual Golf Tour­na­ment will be held April 17 at the Oaks Golf Course.

The cost is $110 per player, or $440 per team. The tour­na­ment rain date is set for April 30.

Reg­is­tra­tion be­gins at 10:30 a.m., fol­lowed by a putting con­test, lunch and a silent auc­tion preview. The shot­gun start is at noon.

Play­ers will have four drink tick­ets for bev­er­ages. Ad­di­tional drink tick­ets can be pur­chased through­out the tour­na­ment. Drinks and snacks will be avail­able on the course.

Heavy hors d’oeu­vres and an award cer­e­mony will fol­low upon tour­na­ment com­ple­tion. Awards will be given to the first, sec­ond and third place teams.

There will also be awards given to the Clos­est to the pin and Putting Con­test win­ners, in­clud­ing door prize draw­ings.

This is meant to be a spe­cial event to kick­off the 2008-09 East­side bas­ket­ball sea­son.
