Pre-K registration set to begin
Early arrival not necessary
Registration for Newton County School System’s Georgia Lottery funded Pre-K program is slated for the week of March 24–28.
Centralized registration will be held by the district in the cafeteria of Cousins Community Building at 8134 Geiger Street in Covington.
Registration hours vary day to day. On March 24 and 27, registration is set for noon to 7 p.m., and on March 25, 26 and 28, registration will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The process does not operate on a first come, first serve basis so early arrival is not necessary. Space is limited, however, to 480 slots for 12 elementary schools. Children will not be placed on the pre-registration list until all required documents are submitted.
Once registration is concluded, all names on the pre-registration list will be placed in a lottery drawing for possible selection. Only students with completed registration packets as of March 28 at 4 p.m. will be eligible for participation in the lottery process.
Enrollment is determined by school attendance zones; therefore, the first 40 students drawn from each school’s attendance zone will be enrolled in the 2008-2009 Pre-K program. The remaining names will be placed on a waiting list and called if and when spaces become available.
To qualify, children must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1. To register a child for the Newton County Pre-K program, parents should bring a certified birth certificate and two proofs of residence — proof of residence must be supplied with one item from each of two categories, category one — electric, gas or water bill in the name of the person enrolling the child, and category two — mortgage contract or lease agreement.
Telephone bills, mortgage payment books, post office addresses, car licenses, credit cards and Medicaid cards will not be accepted as proof of residence. If the child does not live with one of both parents, guardianship or custody documents must be presented.
The school system will be applying to the state for prekindergarten slots for the new school scheduled to open this August. Once information from the state is received and the rezoning process is complete, parents will be notified if their children will attend the new school.
