Mary Sam­mons, 89, of Cov­ing­ton, died March 5 at New­ton Med­i­cal Cen­ter. The daugh­ter of the late James Wal­ter and Mary ( Boswell) Sam­mons, she was born in New­ton County. Miss Sam­mons was a found­ing mem­ber of Cal­vary Bap­tist Church where over many years she taught The Joy Class Sun­day school, served as church sec­re­tary was a mem­ber and of­fi­cer of WMU and was very sup­port­ive of other churches and min­istries. Miss Sam­mons was a long- time em­ployee of Cov­ing­ton Mill, worked for Sch­wobilt Men’s Cloth­ing, Macy’s in down­town At­lanta and was a vol­un­teer for 35 years with New­ton Hospi­tal Aux­il­iary. She en­joyed cro­chet­ing and read­ing. Miss Sam­mons is pre­ceded in death by sib­lings Flora Smith, Robert Sam­mons, Neal Sam­mons, Frank Sam­mons and Allen Sam­mons.

Sur­viv­ing are sis­ter- in- law Retha Sam­mons of In­dian Head, Md.; nieces and neph­ews Den­nis Smith, Mary Ella Bruce, Mike Smith, Kar­lean Hester, Jean Brizzi, Bobby Sam­mons, Drake Sam­mons, Sharon Cal­la­han, Ron­ald Sam­mons, Carol Dims­dale, Nicky Sam­mons, Dar­lene Lan­g­ley, Danny Sam­mons, Michael Sam­mons, Patty Sam­mons, Amy An­der­son; sev­eral great­nieces and – neph­ews, great­great- nieces and – neph­ews and great- great- great- nieces and – neph­ews.

Funeral ser­vices will be held at 2 p. m. Satur­day, March 8, at Cal­vary Bap­tist Church. View­ing will be from 1: 30 p. m. un­til the ser­vice. The Rev. Alan Thompson and the Rev. Roy Kiser will of­fi­ci­ate, and in­ter­ment will fol­low in Cov­ing­ton City Ceme­tery. The fam­ily will re­ceive friends at the Ac­cess Road lo­ca­tion of Cald­well & Cowan to­day, March 7, from 6 p. m. to 8 p. m. Flow­ers are ac­cepted or do­na­tions may be sent to Cal­vary Bap­tist Church, 4228 Mill St., Cov­ing­ton, 30014.
