COVINGTON — Crosstown rivals Newton and Alcovy High met Wednesday on the green top to settle the score once and for all.

In what ended up being an intense afternoon, the two rivals split, with the Alcovy boys sweeping the Rams, 5-0. In girls action, Newton got the best of the Lady Tigers by winning the final match of the afternoon off the racket of number three singles Holly Springer to complete the win.

“It is always good to beat your crosstown rivals,” said Alcovy coach Troy Davis. “I like playing these non-region matches. The players can play with no pressure and it makes us a lot better.”

For the boys, Alcovy’s Kyle Jackson got it started as he defeated Tyler Gose 6-4, 6-2.

In number two singles, Brandon Tisdale received an easy victory after winning the first set, 6-4, against his opponent Mark DeAlva, who had to pull out with an ankle injury.

Concealing the win with three straight matches in singles play was Zach Bowers, who won 64, 6-2 over Bryant Miller. Not satisfied with just one win, the Tigers took to the court in doubles action looking to complete the sweep.

In number one doubles, Aaron Fowler and Michael Hilderbrand were victorious 6-0, 6-1 over Donnavon White and Ayile Baxter.

Miguel Wood and Conner Avery won 6-0, 7-5 over Adam Page and Miles George to seal the deal for Alcovy.

In girls play, other Lady Rams winners on the afternoon

were number one singles Kierstie Moon, who won 6-4, 6-1 over Lea McDonald.

In number two singles, Christine Augusta, who was penciled in at the last minute by Newton coach Jackie Mattison, won 6-4, 6-4 over Mary Wright.

In doubles action, the Lady Tigers got the better part of Newton by winning both matches.

Number one seeded Sherry Hall and Regan Bowers defeated Courtney Reagan and Rhiannon Long 6-2, 7-5. Cassie Turner and Jordan Shull won 6-4, 6-3 over Ashley Tindell and Eryn Wyatt.

“They caused me to sweat a little today,” Mattison said. “I tweaked the lineup a little today after our number two singles got sick. I was a little nervous, but we managed to pull it out.”

Alcovy will next visit Eastside at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Newton will host Alcovy at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
