For many, spring break is a time for family vacations. Trips to Florida or week-long jaunts to the beach are always popular.

But the price of gas and the overall state of the economy has put a strain on everyone’s pocketbook, so staying close to home may be on everyone’s mind.

If you plan to stay in town next week, there are plenty of inexpensive and fulfilling activities for families and kids of all ages.

The Newton County Recreation Department is holding their annual Spring Break Day Camp on for children ages 512 on April 7-11 at the Conyers Street Gym. Slated activities include fitness training, nature walks, sports games and arts and crafts. The camp is from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and participants are responsible for their food throughout the day. For more information, contact Debra Banks at (770) 786-4373. The Newton County YMCA will be conducting the Holiday Camp for children ages 5-12, also beginning Monday and culminating on Friday. Activities include arts and crafts, outdoor games and a possible field trip. Days will be long; from 6:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Snacks will be provided throughout the day, but all participants must bring their own lunch. The cost is $25 per day if registered before Monday, or $35 per day if registering on the day of the camp. Parents wishing to send their child for the entire week can do so for $100 in advance or $110 on the morning of the first day. Finally, for those interested in a family outing, the Newton County library is holding a family movie matinee on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Admission is free and the library will provide complimentary popcorn and drinks. According to the children’s department, the movie is a recent box office family favorite. If you are interested, you can call (770) 385-6444 for the title and details.
