Al­covy, East­side split re­gion match on the ten­nis courts

Lady Ea­gles, Al­covy boys pull off wins

COV­ING­TON — The Al­covy High ten­nis squads split with crosstown ri­val East­side on the road in a sub­re­gion matchup Tues­day with the Lady Ea­gles knock­ing off the Lady Tigers, 5-1, and the Al­covy boys fin­ish­ing with a 4-2 vic­tory.

In girls com­pe­ti­tion, Lindy Steele took the No.1 sin­gles af­ter beat­ing Re­gan Bow­ers 5-2, 6-1 to open the fes­tiv­i­ties with East­side post­ing their first win of the day.

Not to be out­done, se­nior Qeiarra John­son out­lasted Mary Wright 6-0, 6-2 to give East­side its sec­ond of the af­ter­noon.

“We made a good show­ing to­day,” John­son said. “It’s al­ways good to win es­pe­cially against a re­gion op­po­nent.”

Alison Miller and Alora Fuller faced off in the third sin­gles match, with Miller serv­ing up a 6-3, 6-3 win for the Lady Ea­gles’ third match vic­tory.

In the No. 1 dou­bles matches, the Lady Ea­gles dom­i­nated af­ter Sierra Pe­tree and Hail­ley Jones de­feated Lea McDon­ald and Ash­ley Al­varez in both sets 6-2, 6-1.

The fi­nal set ended in a 1210 tiebreaker with Pe­tree and Jones pre­vail­ing, giv­ing East­side yet an­other match vic­tory.

In No.2 dou­bles ac­tion, it ended with Al­covy get­ting its only win of the day as Kim­berly Rary and Jor­dan Shell de­feated Maryanne Fer­gu­son and Nada Sedyame 61, 1-6.

The Lady Ea­gles thus ended with a 5-0 vic­tory.

In boys ac­tion, Al­covy’s Kyle Jack­son took both sets 6-1, 6-1 over Mike Rien­stra.

In No.2 sin­gles, Bran­don Tis­dale and East­side’s Luke Gil­bert split 6-1, 6-2.

Al­covy’s Michael Hilder­brand (7-5) and Jake Bray ( 6- 0) com­peted, even­tu­ally split­ting sets in num­ber three sin­gles.

East­side’s Josh Miller and John Cun­ning­ham split 6-3, 4-6 in No.1 dou­bles ac­tion against Zach Bow­ers and Aaron Fowler.

In No. 2 dou­bles, A.J. Marks and Chris El­liott played Miguel Wood and Lin­den Gon­za­lez end­ing with split sets, 7-5. Al­covy posted a love–five vic­tory to end the match and give the Tigers a 5-2 re­gion win.
