Salem Camp Ground earns spot on Na­tional Reg­is­ter

Ev­ery sum­mer since 1854, with the ex­cep­tion of Civil War years, ten­ters have been wor­ship­ing at the Salem Camp Ground on Salem Road. It has earned a list­ing on the Na­tional Reg­is­ter of His­toric Places for sig­nif­i­cant ar­chi­tec­ture and com­mu­nity plan­ning and de­vel­op­ment be­cause it is a very in­tact camp meet­ing ground with all the sig­nif­i­cant fea­tures: a large, cen­tral taber­na­cle and dozens of tents or houses.

Cited were Ricky Hil­liard, Misty Mad­dox-Dobbs, Meredith Oz­ley, Dayna Passerella, Me­lanie Rogers, Melissa Tice, William Matthew Henderson, Lori Melinda Digby, Benita Estelle Wages and Pa­trick M. Klein.

State grant will help fill li­brary

The New­ton County Li­brary is one of many li­braries to re­ceive fund­ing from the Gov­er­nor’s Book Ini­tia­tive, a $10 mil­lion pack-

age de­signed to add over 450,000 books to the state’s li­braries.

Zoo At­lanta will cel­e­brate fa­mous go­ril­laWil­lie B.’s birth­day as he con­tin­ues to set longevity records for re­pro­duc­tion. Two of the fe­males in his fam­ily are ex­pect­ing.

Prince named merit fi­nal­ist

Emily Prince of East­side High School has been named a Na­tional Merit Fi­nal­ist as has Meredith Oz­ley of New­ton High School.

Gour­ley named “Aca­demic Ath­lete of the Week”

New­ton High School’s Gretchen Gour­ley was hon­ored for her ath­letic and aca­demic ac­com­plish­ments by Ge­or­gia Pub­lic Television’s PrepS­ports. She is a four-year starter on the Lady Rams soc­cer team. Gour­ley is the sec­ond stu­dent-ath­lete from the com­mu­nity to be hon­ored by Prep-Sports. East­side’s Matt Schell was hon­ored in Oc­to­ber.

The sign of the cross

In me­mory of the late Rev. Thomas J. White, First Pres­by­te­rian Church of Cov­ing­ton’s for­mer pas­tor for 22 years, the con­gre­ga­tion had a Celtic cross made for the new, yet sparse, sanc­tu­ary, ac­cord­ing to parish­ioner pat Pa­trick of Cov­ing­ton.

Nathalie Dupree is film­ing a 26-part cook­ing se­ries, which will air on Ge­or­gia Pub­lic Television, at her house in So­cial Cir­cle.
