Oxford women suffer first loss to National Power Polk CC
The Oxford College women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in the final game of the Oxford Cup 2008 on Saturday night to JUCO 1 powerhouse Polk Community College from Lakeland, Fla.
Oxford has its best chance of the game in the first minute when Arielle Hayden got in behind the Polk defense and laid a ball across the box to Taylor Tyger whose shot was saved by the Polk goalkeeper at close range. Oxford had two other chances early in the first 10 minutes, but could not get the ball behind the Polk goalkeeper.
Betsy Rudd anchored an Oxford defense that shut down Polk’s potent attack for much of the first half. Polk’s first real chance of the match came in the 20th minute when it capitalized on an Oxford mistake and tucked a ball behind Oxford goalkeeper Allie Kayhart, who was making her first start of the season. Polk doubled their lead in the 25th minute took the 2-0 lead to halftime.
The Lady Eagles did well to limit Polk’s chances on goal for the first 60 minutes of the match until Polk broke the game open and scored four times in the last 30 minutes to secure the win.
