Lady Rams fall to Union Grove
The Lady Rams ran into a buzz saw on the diamond Wednesday as they dropped a 3-1 decision to Union Grove in region play at Tuner Lake.
Newton (6-4, 2-1 Region 2-AAAAA) lost for the first time in region play, but it wasn’t due to their defense and pitching.
Holly Springer pitched another solid game and the Lady Rams played sound defense behind her. The offense, on the other had, couldn’t pick her up. Despite its best effort, Union Grove pitcher Meagan Stover kept Newton off balance all evening as she struck out 12 batters to post the win.
Newton faced an early deficit as the Lady Wolverines scored two runs in the first inning. Sammi Becker responded with a single in the bottom of the first and later moved into scoring position after Choconna Marks reached base on an error.
