Newton volleyball downs Stephenson in region play
The Newton volleyball team (5-3 overall, 2-1 Region 2-AAAAA) defeated Stephenson in three games, 2513 and 25-9 Tuesday.
Newton got off to a sluggish start but quickly collected themselves midway through the match to cruise to a 25-13 victory.
Stephenson took a 3-1 lead early in the opening game, taking Newton out of their game.
The Lady Rams came to life after junior Salina Xiong aced a serve to the back line.
However, the Lady Jaguars continued to pour it on, scoring two consecutive points before junior Joy Pollock stepped up her power game with a kill to the back line.
The Lady Rams fought back shot after shot and executed aggressively with the power game and kills off the hands of junior Joy Pollock to take a 10-6 lead.
Stephenson gave Newton a point when they were called for out of position on the Newton serve.
Junior Kayla Bunch got into the action with a kill to the back corner of the court before Xiong got a tip point to extend the Lady Rams lead.
The Lady Rams were all over the save after save.
The Rams continued to play solid defense and execute on the offensive side of the ball with Bunch doing the damage with her powerful spikes to give Newton a 25-13 victory.
The second game found Newton down 16-4 midway through before the Lady Rams stormed back on the play of junior Lupita Serato, senior April Lo and Alicia King. It wasn't enough though as the Lady Rams dropped the game 25-19.
The tiebreaker match was all Newton coming away with a 25-9 victory. one ace for both sets.
The JV jumped all over Stephenson defeating them 25-13. Kasey Peppers, Raven Prather and Tiffany Lo made big contributions on defense and offense for Coach Laramy Wells' JV Lady Rams
“We’re always glad to win,” said Newton head coach Shandelyn Carter. “I’m proud of my girls, but I didn’t feel like they played with the intensity they are capable of.”
