New­ton volleyball downs Stephen­son in re­gion play

The New­ton volleyball team (5-3 over­all, 2-1 Re­gion 2-AAAAA) de­feated Stephen­son in three games, 2513 and 25-9 Tues­day.

New­ton got off to a slug­gish start but quickly col­lected them­selves mid­way through the match to cruise to a 25-13 victory.

Stephen­son took a 3-1 lead early in the open­ing game, tak­ing New­ton out of their game.

The Lady Rams came to life af­ter ju­nior Salina Xiong aced a serve to the back line.

How­ever, the Lady Jaguars con­tin­ued to pour it on, scor­ing two con­sec­u­tive points be­fore ju­nior Joy Pol­lock stepped up her power game with a kill to the back line.

The Lady Rams fought back shot af­ter shot and ex­e­cuted ag­gres­sively with the power game and kills off the hands of ju­nior Joy Pol­lock to take a 10-6 lead.

Stephen­son gave New­ton a point when they were called for out of po­si­tion on the New­ton serve.

Ju­nior Kayla Bunch got into the action with a kill to the back cor­ner of the court be­fore Xiong got a tip point to ex­tend the Lady Rams lead.

The Lady Rams were all over the save af­ter save.

The Rams con­tin­ued to play solid de­fense and ex­e­cute on the of­fen­sive side of the ball with Bunch do­ing the dam­age with her pow­er­ful spikes to give New­ton a 25-13 victory.

The sec­ond game found New­ton down 16-4 mid­way through be­fore the Lady Rams stormed back on the play of ju­nior Lupita Ser­ato, se­nior April Lo and Ali­cia King. It wasn't enough though as the Lady Rams dropped the game 25-19.

The tiebreaker match was all New­ton com­ing away with a 25-9 victory. one ace for both sets.

The JV jumped all over Stephen­son de­feat­ing them 25-13. Kasey Pep­pers, Raven Prather and Tif­fany Lo made big con­tri­bu­tions on de­fense and of­fense for Coach Laramy Wells' JV Lady Rams

“We’re al­ways glad to win,” said New­ton head coach Shan­de­lyn Carter. “I’m proud of my girls, but I didn’t feel like they played with the in­ten­sity they are ca­pa­ble of.”
