Covington man recognized as parole board regional employee of the year
The Central Region of the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Parole recently honored Walter Singleton as Employee of the Year.
Walter is a Parole Officer in the Jonesboro Parole Office. The award was presented Aug. 28, 2008, at the Parole Association of Georgia’s annual training conference in Augusta.
Walter began his career with the Parole Board in 2001. He was promoted to Senior Parole Officer in 2002. Walter immediately took advantage of additional training opportunities by becoming a certified Cognitive Skills Facilitator. He became a member of the Jonesboro Parole Office Arrest Team and is currently the Team Leader.
In 2002, Walter received a Hawthorne Award for assisting the local narcotics unit in arresting a parolee who was carrying weapons and drugs. In 2003, he was commended for taking immediate action during an arrest situation, in order to rescue a woman who was in danger and screaming for help. In 2007, he received a Leadership Coin for his efforts to stop a suicide attempt.
Parole Board Chair L. Gale Buckner stated, “ The Board is so proud of the award recipients and their accomplishments. They have put their hearts into their work, and are changing the lives of parolees for the better while making our communities safer.”
As defined by the agency’s perfor- mance measures, Walter consistently performs his job at a high level and is a very productive officer. “ Walter is an example to less experienced officers,” stated Chief Parole Officer Joey Morris. “ He always uses excellent judgment in critical situations. He perceives his job as that of an officer trained to ensure compliance, but also shows concern for the welfare of those he supervises.”
Geographically, Parole Board operations are divided into six regions. The Central Region stretches from Macon to Milledgeville and includes Newton County. Only one employee per region is recognized with this annual award.
