Rockdale got the two runs back in the fifth when Kattie Overstreet walked before Andrea Mitchell tripled to left bringing in a run.
Ferrell got on with an error by the shortstop and rounded first going into second safely while Mitchell slipped home for the score to in crease the Lady Bulldogs’ lead to 5-2 going into the bottom of the inning.
Melton tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a bloop single before scoring the winning run to cap the improbable comeback.
“It was a great game, but everybody wants to finish with a win, said Rockdale head coach Holly Hamilton. I’m proud of the girls. We’re young, but we’re getting there. Not to take away from Alcovy’s win because they’ve got a very good team.”
Bates, who challenged his team in the bottom of the seventh, said the win should go along way to build his player’s confidence.
“If you tell me we are going to win 16-1, I’m going to take that every time,” bates said. “This one feels much sweeter though.” Alcovy drops second game to Thomson, 6-5
The Lady Tigers softball team got off to a sluggish start in the second game of a doubleheader at Tiger Field Saturday, falling to Thomson 6-5.
Summer Kusch had a rough go when she took the mound for Alcovy (8-4 overall, 3-0 Region-4-AAAA) giving up five runs in the top of the first inning without giving up a hit.
Kusch walked the first five batters she faced before Dallas Hardin took over on the mound in the same inning. Hardin struck out the first batter she faced and left the final two outs for her defense.
“We had a bad first inning, said Alcovy head coach Casey Bates. It’s tough when you walk four batters in the first inning and get a couple of errors here and there it’s hard to come back, but that’s part of the game.”
The Lady Tigers struggled at the plate getting only one hit in their half of the first inning. Melody Belcher grounded out before Amber Melton flied out to center. Kusch went down swinging for the last out of the inning to keep the score at 5-0 going into the top of the second.
Hardin got the first batter of the inning to ground out to third before hitting the second batter, then giving up a single to third batter she faced, but came back to send the next batter back to the dugout to end the Thomson half of the inning.
Alcovy picked up four runs in the bottom of the second when Kelsey Sweat hit a single to left before Caitlin Williams singled to right center, then Bethany Dillard singled to the gap in left center loading the bases.
Jasmine Tolen stepped up to a challenge from her father to collect $100 if she hit a home run. She took the challenge and hit 2-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a base-clearing grand slam, sending her dad to the ATM while bringing her team within one run.
Hardin gave up a hit to the first Thomson batter in the top of the third, but got the next two batters to pop up to second before the final batter lined to first to end the inning.
Alcovy couldn’t score in the bottom of the third and the score remained 5-4 going into the top of the fourth.
Hannah Wilson reached first on an error to lead off the fourth inning for Thomson. But Kelsey Sweat popped up from her crouching position behind the plate and sent a bullet to Macy Dowdy at second put out to erase the runner.
Hardin threw three perfect strikes pass the next batter before getting the last batter to ground out to Dowdy to end the top half of the inning.
Alcovy continued to struggle at the plate in their half of the fourth while Thomson pitcher Brooke Herkel seemed to get stronger with each passing inning.
Hardin responded in the fifth inning and the score 5-4 heading to the sixth.
Alcovy tied the game in the sixth inning when Hardin connected tripled home Tolen after she had reached on a fielder’s choice.
Thomson scored the goahead run in the seventh off an error, and Alcovy couldn’t muster the same magic they displayed against Rockdale earlier in the game.
“We came back to tie it up, but it’s hard to come back from an inning like we had in the beginning of the game. They did what they needed to do to get the run across in the seventh and we didn’t, so I give them the credit for doing what they had to do to win the game.”
Thomson scored six runs off seven hits while Herkel recorded two strikeouts with no walks to garnish the win. Alcovy got five runs off nine hits. With Hardin registering six strikeouts and five walks.
