Weekend events

The Covington News - - Opinion -

This weekend two annual Covington events will take place downtown— The Covington Police fundraiser, the Fuzz Run, and the Literacy Festival co-sponsored by The Learning Center and Main Street Covington.

While hundreds will participate in these two events, we as Newton County residents must continue to support law enforcement and early learning efforts throughout the year.

The Covington Police Department does a fantastic job of patrolling city streets, maintaining visibility during special events and bringing criminals to justice. We should support the CPD by obeying the law and speaking out when others are not as well as supporting the department financially.

Also, preparing students to read before they enter school is as vitally important to a thriving community as a strong public safety department. Assisting agencies in the community such as The Learning Center and the Newton County Public Library with monetary donations and volunteer efforts will help Covington’s future.
