Piedmont Academy’s new robotics team heads to competition
Piedmont Academy’s new robotics development and design team called B.E.S.T. P.A.R.T.S. — which stands for Boosting Engineering, Science & Technology, Piedmont Academy Robotics Team Students — attended the National kick-off day for the 2008 BEST Robotics competition on Sept. 13 at the Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta.
There the members of PARTS witnessed the unveiling of the game theme, rules and playing field for of this year’s competition.
The theme this year is “Just Plane Crazy” and requires each robotics team to design, develop and build a robot which can negotiate a complicated course where the team must assemble and deliver an airplane.
The airplane must be assembled by the robot which is controlled by an operator and spotter. The team has only three minutes to accomplish the task, numerous obstacles and very strict rules to follow.
The team also has only six weeks to design, build and be ready to compete in the state level event at Southern Polytechnic State University on Oct. 25.
This Robotics Team is a new program for Piedmont Academy and is coached by Ralph Hickman, the school’s high school math teacher, and assisted by a fellow teacher David Odegaard.
The team is open to eighth through 12th grade students and meets during and after school.
