Randy Vinson, Fleming’s Democratic opponent for District 5 said he was familiar with the questions surrounding Fleming’s eligibility to run for office in the district.

“Over the past few months we’ve had several people, some of them high ranking members of the Republican Party tell us we needed to look at Tim’s residency and see if he’s truly qualified to run,” Vinson said, adding he was reluctant to do so until he read a press release from Handel’s office on the matter of homestead exemptions.

After deciding that Fleming’s candidacy should be challenged, Vinson said the decision was made that someone from the Newton County Democratic Party should bring the challenge forward and so Childers, who is a resident of District 5, agreed to file the challenge.

Vinson said he hopes to gain from the challenge “clarification of is [Fleming] truly a resident of District 5.”

As of press time Fleming did not return calls for comment.
