Classes, gear, trips of­fered for wouldbe area divers

In busi­ness for more than a year, East At­lanta Divers has grown a solid clien­tele of de­voted scuba en­thu­si­asts in its time in Cov­ing­ton.

Lo­cated on In­dus­trial Boule­vard, the shop is a full ser­vice PADI Dive Cen­ter. PADI (the Pro­fes­sional As­so­ci­a­tion of Div­ing In­struc­tors) is the world’s most widely rec­og­nized recre­ational div­ing and dive train­ing or­ga­ni­za­tion.

East At­lanta Divers of­fers a range of scuba classes, from the recre­ational to the tech­ni­cal in­clud­ing Open Wa­ter Diver, Ad­vanced Open Wa­ter Diver, Res­cue Diver, Mas­ter Scuba Diver, En­riched Air Nitrox and un­der­wa­ter dig­i­tal photography.

“With each level, they get more pro­fi­cient and more comfortable,” said Con­rad Rucker, an IDC div­ing course in­struc- tor who has been div­ing since 1978.

East At­lanta em­ploys six dive in­struc­tors.

“We have a re­ally good group,” said Jamie Owens, man­ager of East At­lanta Divers.

Class­room in­struc­tion to earn your en­try level Open Wa­ter Diver cer­ti­fi­ca­tion takes place on site over three days. En­closed pool in­struc­tion fol­lows at a lo­cal in­door swim­ming pool in New­ton County for a to­tal of 31 hours in­struc­tion time at a cost of $250.

Open wa­ter check out dives take place ei­ther in Pel­ham, Ala. ($260) or in Weeki Watchee Springs, Fla. ($380). The check­out fee in­cludes ho­tel, ad­mis­sion fees, tanks, weights, air fills and some food. Scuba equip­ment rental, if needed, is $60.

Mask, snorkel and fins can not be rented. How­ever stu­dents can pur­chase th­ese items at a bun­dled dis­count rate of $165.

East At­lanta plans two large away trips a year. In mid-March a group will travel to Cozumel, Mex­ico for a week of div­ing.

The shop sells sev­eral lines of scuba gear in­clud­ing Scubapro, Sher­wood Scuba, Aeris and Akona. Pack­ages on scuba gear are avail­able. In­ter­est fee fi­nanc­ing is also avail­able.

Re­fresher cour­ses and scuba equip­ment ser­vic­ing are of­fered. There is an East At­lanta Divers Club that meets the sec­ond Tues­day of each month at the dive cen­ter to plan fu­ture ac­tiv­i­ties.
