Classes, gear, trips offered for wouldbe area divers
In business for more than a year, East Atlanta Divers has grown a solid clientele of devoted scuba enthusiasts in its time in Covington.
Located on Industrial Boulevard, the shop is a full service PADI Dive Center. PADI (the Professional Association of Diving Instructors) is the world’s most widely recognized recreational diving and dive training organization.
East Atlanta Divers offers a range of scuba classes, from the recreational to the technical including Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, Master Scuba Diver, Enriched Air Nitrox and underwater digital photography.
“With each level, they get more proficient and more comfortable,” said Conrad Rucker, an IDC diving course instruc- tor who has been diving since 1978.
East Atlanta employs six dive instructors.
“We have a really good group,” said Jamie Owens, manager of East Atlanta Divers.
Classroom instruction to earn your entry level Open Water Diver certification takes place on site over three days. Enclosed pool instruction follows at a local indoor swimming pool in Newton County for a total of 31 hours instruction time at a cost of $250.
Open water check out dives take place either in Pelham, Ala. ($260) or in Weeki Watchee Springs, Fla. ($380). The checkout fee includes hotel, admission fees, tanks, weights, air fills and some food. Scuba equipment rental, if needed, is $60.
Mask, snorkel and fins can not be rented. However students can purchase these items at a bundled discount rate of $165.
East Atlanta plans two large away trips a year. In mid-March a group will travel to Cozumel, Mexico for a week of diving.
The shop sells several lines of scuba gear including Scubapro, Sherwood Scuba, Aeris and Akona. Packages on scuba gear are available. Interest fee financing is also available.
Refresher courses and scuba equipment servicing are offered. There is an East Atlanta Divers Club that meets the second Tuesday of each month at the dive center to plan future activities.
