Lady Rams top Al­covy at tri-match

On Tues­day af­ter­noon, the New­ton Rams trav­eled cross town to take on the Al­covy Tigers women’s volleyball team.

Looking to hold on to the brag­ging rights that the foot­ball team re­trieved two weeks ago for the school, the Lady Tigers would find them­selves backed into a cor­ner.

Af­ter split­ting the first two games 25-19, 25-27, Al­covy would even­tu­ally suc­cumb to ter­rific play by New­ton's Salina Xiong and April Lo 25-16 in the de­cid­ing third game.

In the first game of the night, the Lady Rams took a com­mand­ing 15-1 lead as Kayla Bunch served up four aces along with two kills.

Able to fight their way back to 197, the Lady Tigers put the ball in the hands of Holly Oakes whose ser­vice game brought Al­covy to life.

Serv­ing for 11 con­sec­u­tive points with three aces, Oakes brought the Lady Tigers back to within one point mak­ing the score 19-18.

Putting the ball back in the hands of Bunch with only six points needed would be all New­ton would have to do. Gath­er­ing one more ace and set­ting up team­mate Joy Pol­lock for the game winning kill, the Lady Rams would take the first game 25-19.
