Our thoughts...

We have no editorial preference in the 5th district commissioner’s race. Either Randy Vinson or Tim Fleming would be a good choice for the position. However, the challenge by the Vinson campaign about Fleming’s candidacy was a legitimate one.

Secretary of State Karen Handel’s recent ruling clearly indicates if you declare a homestead exception, no matter what your later intentions are, that is where your vote is.

The Board of Elections is supposed to fairly review and enforce Georgia elections. In this case because the chairman of the Newton County board contributed to the Fleming campaign, he excused himself — which was the proper thing to do.

In the future, the chairman of this board should be a person who is non-partisan in action and will be able to make a fair judgment.

The Vinson campaign has a just right to seek a higher decision on this non-decision
