Landown­ers ask­ing area by Al­covy River be re­zoned as in­dus­trial

A pro­posed in­dus­trial de­vel­op­ment in New­ton County has drawn crit­i­cism from en­vi­ron­men­tal­ists, who ques­tion its lo­ca­tion in an en­vi­ron­men­tally sen­si­tive area of the Al­covy River wa­ter­shed.

The Hazel­brand Road In­dus­trial Park is still in the ini­tial plan­ning phase. It is in­tended to be a 2.5 mil­lion square-foot in­dus­trial park lo­cated on 214 acres of land next to SKC Inc.

Landown­ers Gil Gainer, J.S. Gainer Jr. and Essie Greer have ap­plied for an­nex­a­tion into the city of Cov­ing­ton and for an in­dus­trial re­zon­ing.

Be­cause of the project’s scale and po­ten­tial im­pact, it is re­quired to go through a De­vel­op­ment of Re­gional Im­pact with the North­east Ge­or­gia Re­gional De­vel­op­ment Cen­ter. A hear­ing on the project took place
