So­cial Cir­cle man hon­ored by NGWA

H.G. “Bob” Holder of Holder Pump andWell Ser­vice in So­cial Cir­cle has re­ceived the Na­tional Ground Wa­ter As­so­ci­a­tion’s (NGWA) Ross L. Oliver Award for out­stand­ing con­tri­bu­tions to the ground wa­ter in­dus­try.

The award will be pre­sented to Holder at the 2008 NGWA Ground Wa­ter Expo and An­nual Meet­ing in Las Ve­gas in De­cem­ber.

Holder started his wa­ter well con­tract­ing busi­ness in Cov­ing­ton in 1969 and quickly rose through the lead­er­ship ranks in the in­dus­try. He has served as pres­i­dent of the Ge­or­gia Wa­ter Well As­so­ci­a­tion from 19701975, pres­i­dent of the South At­lanticWaterWell As­so­ci­a­tion in Myr­tle Beach, S.C. in 1976, and pres­i­dent of the Colum­bus, Ohio-based Na­tion­alWater Well As­so­ci­a­tion (now NGWA) in 1982.

In 1983, Holder and his wife, Jeanne, moved to Fair­banks, Alaska and opened Klondike Drilling Co. He was elected to the Alaska Wa­ter Well As­so­ci­a­tion in 1985 and as pres­i­dent in 1987. While in Alaska, Holder learned the sport of dogsled racing. Dur­ing his 12-year ca­reer in the sport, he be­came the only per­son to com­plete three 1,000-mile races back to back in­clud­ing the fa­mous Idi­tarod race.

In 1991, the Hold­ers moved back to Cov­ing­ton. He started Holder Well and Pump Ser­vice Co. and be­came a mem­ber of the Ge­or­gia Drillers Asso- cia­tion, of which he re­mains a mem­ber to­day.

In con­vey­ing the Ross L. Oliver Award, 2008 NGWA Pres­i­dent Scott Fowler said Holder is “an ex­traor­di­nary man who has con­trib­uted to the ground wa­ter in­dus­try in ex­traor­di­nary ways.”

“Bob Holder has been a leader at ev­ery level of our in­dus­try, sac­ri­fic­ing time and money to do so. We have all ben­e­fit­ted from his de­vo­tion to the ground wa­ter in­dus­try and the pro­fes­sion­als who serve it,” said Fowler, a cer­ti­fied well driller/pump in­staller. “I can think of no one more de­serv­ing of this award.”

NGWA, a non­profit or­ga­ni­za­tion com­prised of 14,000 U.S. and in­ter­na­tional ground wa­ter pro­fes­sion­als — con­trac­tors, equip­ment man­u­fac­tur­ers, sup­pli­ers, sci­en­tists, and en­gi­neers — is ded­i­cated to ad­vanc­ing the ex­per­tise of all ground wa­ter pro­fes­sion­als and to fur­ther­ing ground wa­ter aware­ness and pro­tec­tion through ed­u­ca­tion and out­reach.
