WDC to host breast can­cer fo­rum

Lisa McWil­liams, Clin­i­cal Man­ager of The Women’s Di­ag­nos­tic Cen­ter will be giv­ing out in­for­ma­tion and mam­mo­gram coupons at lo­cal busi­nesses and physi­cians’ offices through the end of Oc­to­ber.

“ We are invit­ing those who need in­for­ma­tion about breast health and fi­nan­cial re­sources for mam­mog­ra­phy to the War­riors for Hope Fo­rum and Lun­cheon on Oct. 22,” McWil­liams said.

The fo­rum, the sec­ond in­stall­ment in a se­ries of four fo­rums, is a joint ef­fort of the WDC and the Amer­i­can Can­cer So­ci­ety to ed­u­cate women on the im­por­tance of early de­tec­tion and treat­ment of breast can­cer.

“ We want women to know about the re­sources that are avail­able to them,” McWil­liams said. “ In ad­di­tion to hav­ing su­pe­rior di­ag­nos­tic and treat­ment ser­vices, we of­fer com­fort mea­sures and emo­tional sup­port to women who are fac­ing the di­ag­no­sis of breast can­cer.”

WDC vol­un­teers Kay Goff and Wendi Martinez to­gether with Kat John­son are all breast can­cer sur­vivors and know first hand the im­por­tance of emo­tional sup­port.

“ We are so for­tu­nate to have th­ese ex­cep­tional ladies who are so ded­i­cated to help­ing other women,” McWil­liams said.

Goff, Martinez, and John­son are in­volved in the op­er­a­tion of The Hope Bou­tique that of­fers pa­tients free wigs, tur­bans, scarves and breast pros­the­ses. The Bou­tique, lo­cated in­side the WDC, is a place where pa­tients re­ceive un­der­stand­ing and hope. They also co­or­di­nate monthly sup­port group meet­ings and help McWil­liams or­ga­nize the an­nual Por­traits of Hope Cel­e­bra­tion.
