Locals in Breast Cancer 3-Day
Cathy Mays, Joan Oliver and Crystal Joyner from Newton Medical Center’s Surgical Services will join thousands of others this weekend on a 60-mile route around Atlanta for the Breast Cancer 3Day event. The challenging weekend requires participants to walk nearly the length of a marathon three days in a row, sleep in tents and eat under the stars.
The three began training last April after Oliver’s twin sister succumbed to metastatic breast cancer. Mays lost a good friend to breast cancer earlier in the spring. The entire OR staff has rallied behind them with donations, good wishes, and survival supplies.
“We’ve raised a total of $7, 710,” says Oliver. Each of them exceeded the minimum required amount of $2,200. “We want to thank everyone for the outpouring of support we’ve received,” she said. Staff members from the Post Anesthesia Care Unit made pink scarves, hand warmers, hats and goodie bags filled with cold weather supplies.
Proceeds from the walk fund lifesaving breast cancer research and community outreach programs.
The Breast Cancer 3 Day begins Oct. 24 at 7 a.m. with opening ceremonies at North Point Mall and ends around 5 p.m. Oct. 26 with closing ceremonies at the World Congress Center. For more information, visit www.the3day.org.
