Lo­cals in Breast Can­cer 3-Day

Cathy Mays, Joan Oliver and Crys­tal Joyner from New­ton Med­i­cal Cen­ter’s Sur­gi­cal Ser­vices will join thou­sands of oth­ers this week­end on a 60-mile route around At­lanta for the Breast Can­cer 3Day event. The chal­leng­ing week­end re­quires par­tic­i­pants to walk nearly the length of a marathon three days in a row, sleep in tents and eat un­der the stars.

The three be­gan train­ing last April af­ter Oliver’s twin sis­ter suc­cumbed to metastatic breast can­cer. Mays lost a good friend to breast can­cer ear­lier in the spring. The en­tire OR staff has ral­lied be­hind them with do­na­tions, good wishes, and sur­vival sup­plies.

“We’ve raised a to­tal of $7, 710,” says Oliver. Each of them ex­ceeded the min­i­mum re­quired amount of $2,200. “We want to thank every­one for the out­pour­ing of sup­port we’ve re­ceived,” she said. Staff mem­bers from the Post Anes­the­sia Care Unit made pink scarves, hand warm­ers, hats and goodie bags filled with cold weather sup­plies.

Pro­ceeds from the walk fund life­sav­ing breast can­cer re­search and com­mu­nity out­reach pro­grams.

The Breast Can­cer 3 Day be­gins Oct. 24 at 7 a.m. with open­ing cer­e­monies at North Point Mall and ends around 5 p.m. Oct. 26 with clos­ing cer­e­monies at the World Congress Cen­ter. For more in­for­ma­tion, visit www.the3­day.org.
