Veterans runs to title, 28-12 over Ray Davis
Veterans Memorial Middle School won its third straight NewRock football championship Wednesday with a 28-12 victory over Ray Davis at Evans Memorial Stadium.
Darius Dean and Cornell White combined to rush for four touchdowns to power the Generals to its third consecutive title.
“We had a great year,” head coach Jim Puckett said. “The key to our success was preparation. Our kids have worked so hard this year each week for our next game.”
The Generals came into the season with hopes of repeating last year’s success and Puckett said his team had their sights set on the prize from the outset.
“Our goal from the very beginning was to win a championship and go undefeated,” he said. “They listen and are very coachable. Darius Dean just has so much raw speed. He's still learning the game, but once he gets to open field, there are very few if any players in our league who can catch him. He's a great kid - very humble and hard-working.”
The win gives Veterans bragging rights for yet another year. It also gives the Generals two undefeated season in their last three years.
“Winning our third straight championship is very special because we've worked so hard to build a winning program here with tradition and respect,” Puckett said. “We do things the right way here at Veterans. We hold all of our athletes to a very high standard of conduct, academic performance and respect for themselves and their teachers. Our football program is modeled around that foundation.”
