teers and parents more than high school. At Veterans, it’s been a group effort. Puckett has two of the best assistant coaches that he said really care about the program and the staff and community has supported their team throughout its run.

“One of the keys to our success is that I have two fantastic assistant coaches,” he said. Coach [Durwood] Helms and coach [Cliff] Roberts both love football and love these kids. We have fun at practice. We teach and coach, but we have fun. We run a disciplined program, and the kids have bought into it. Another key is the wonderful support of our administration. Anything we need for our program, our athletic director James Peek, and principal Eric Arena, make sure we get it. Also, we had several returning starters this year - players like Cornell White, Ejike Kingsley, Kenneth Deberry, and more. They stepped up and became leaders for us.”

Veterans’ perfect 8-0 season is a testament to total team effort. Pucckett said his players will always be able to look back on their days in his program and draw from the successes they’ve had as they go onto high school and beyond.

“As a coach, it just makes you so proud for the players,” he added. “They learn so much on the football field, and the relationships I build with them hopefully will last much longer than a single football season.”
