Deer Festival kicks off Nov. 8 in Monticello
The Monticello – Jasper County Chamber of Commerce has been gearing up for this year’s Deer Festival over the past few months. The festival, which is held on the Square in downtown Monticello, will take place on Saturday, Nov. 8.
The Deer Festival kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with the Deer Dash, a one-mile fun run and 5K run/walk, that is being held at a new location this year, Jasper County Middle School. The race will take participants through the rolling countryside of Monticello. Copies of the route and applications for the race can be found at the Chamber of Commerce office on the Square. Both children and adults are encouraged to participate with awards given in each race by age group. Entry fees are $20 the day of the race. The Bank of Monticello, McIntosh State Bank, Jasper Memorial Hospital, AT&T, Central GA EMC and PermaTherm are this year’s race sponsors.
The parade will begin at 2 p.m. and applications to participate are currently being taken at the Chamber of Commerce office. Anyone who wants to make or enter a float in this year’s parade is encouraged to do so. Parade coordinator is Jeff Greeson.
Arts and crafts vendors are encouraged to participate in this year’s festival as well. There are still spots available on the grass in the Square for fiber artists, wood carvers, potters, weavers and painters. Each spot is $150. Informational booths are also available to non-profit groups that would like to provide the community with information on their services for $40. All of the food vendor spots have been filled providing for a wide variety of concessions. A sampling of some of the food available at the festival includes fried fish, grilled and barbecued chicken, nonalcoholic daiquiri style smoothies, blooming onions, smoked turkey legs and deserts and sweets of all kinds.
All vendors for the festival (food, craft and informational) must be registered with the Chamber of Commerce to ensure that everyone has the proper permits required by the City of Monticello and the Georgia Department of Revenue.
