Social Circle boys, girls drop home openers
Social Circle fans left the gym disappointed Saturday night after watching their varsity basketball teams lose home openers to rival Monroe Area.
The boys (0-2) were blown out 81-48 while the Lady Redskins (0-2) were defeated 58-48.
Josh Smith from Monroe Area (34) led all scorers with 19 points and was one of four Monroe players to score in double digits.
Aaron Gaither led Social Circle with 14 points while Todd Hardge scored 11.
The Lady Hurricanes (2-4) were led in part by Lakeisha Spikes and Nicole Thurmond who had 10 points each. Shermika Harris was the Lady Redskins' top scorer with 11 points.
At the start of the boys game, Social Circle played well and even led
Hardge kept the score tight early in the second period after he scored six unanswered points for Social Circle, but the half ended with Monroe leading 33-26.
It went downhill fast for the Redskins in the third frame. The Redskins couldn't make shots and got into foul trouble while Monroe scored at will.
By the end of the third period, Social Circle trailed Monroe 62-35.
