New­ton's Hawkins up to his old tricks

Ja­mon Hawkins is no stranger to com­ing up big on the hard­woods.

New­ton’s se­nior shoot­ing guard led the Rams in scor­ing last year and se­cured GACA 5A All-state and All-re­gion first team nods.

Hawkins scored 20 points against Al­covy Satur­day in New­ton’s 56-45 over its county ri­val and led the Rams to a per­fect 2-0 record in­clud­ing the Rams blowout victory over Jones County.

For his spec­tac­u­lar play and floor lead­er­ship, Hawkins earned The Cov­ing­ton News/Johnny’s Pizza Ath­lete of the Week for Dec. 6.

Hawkins is av­er­ag­ing nearly 20 points per game, but maybe more im­pres­sively, a team-high 8.5 as­sists per game.

Ja­mon Hawkins has picked up where he left off in 2007 and New­ton is off to its best start un­der Rick Ras­mussen. Hawkins is av­er­ag­ing a shade un­der 20 points per game while dish­ing out nearly nine dimes a game.
