2 New­ton crashes in­volve chil­dren

7-year-olds, preg­nant driver hos­pi­tal­ized in ac­ci­dents

More than 2,018 ac­ci­dents, 555 in­juries and 17 fatal­i­ties occurred on Ge­or­gia streets and high­ways dur­ing the hol­i­day pe­riod which be­gan 6 p. m. Wed. Dec. 24 and ended noon yes­ter­day. The ac­ci­dents in­cluded two in New­ton County in­volv­ing 7-year-olds.

Christ­mas Day, a 7-year-old was life-flighted to Chil­dren’s Health­care of At­lanta at Egle­ston af­ter col­lid­ing with a Chevy Sub­ur­ban.

Ac­cord­ing to Trooper Brian Marks with the Ge­or­gia State Pa­trol, the 7year-old, who was rid­ing his bike on Bro­ken Branch Court in the Set­tler’s Grove sub­di­vi­sion, was com­ing down the hill at a high rate of speed. He couldn’t stop his bike, ran the stop sign and broad­sided the SUV.

Marks said the paramedics at the ac­ci­dent scene said the boy suf­fered head in­juries and was bleed­ing from his head.

The boy’s con­di­tion un­known.

The day af­ter Christ­mas, an­other 7-year-old was in­volved in a crash on Ga. High­way 36.

Ac­cord­ing to Marks, around 8: 48 p. m., the 7-year-old was rid­ing in a Ford Taurus trav­el­ing south on High­way 36 when a Buick Riviera trav­el­ing north crossed the cen­ter line and hit car.

The driver of the Taurus, who is 6-month preg­nant, was trapped in the car and had to be ex­tracted by the fire depart­ment. She was trans­ported to Grady Memo­rial Hospi-
