City coun­cil an­swers to packed crowd

Pro­posed mill­age rate in­crease voted down unan­i­mously Fi­nal down­town re­design un­veiled by Ur­ban Col­lage

An un­of­fi­cial vote was also tal­lied of the cit­i­zens present at the meet­ing. None voiced their ap­proval of the mill­age hike.

Af­ter this, the coun­cil voted unan­i­mously not to in­crease the rate.

The pro­posed in­crease was in­tro­duced by the So­cial Cir­cle De­vel­op­ment Au­thor­ity, and it would have raised the mill­age rate by one mill, from 7.411 to 8.411, gen­er­at­ing an from the Blue Wil­low Inn.

The plan, which would cost a pro­jected $1.2 mil­lion, would nar­row Chero­kee Road where it passes through down­town and would ex­pand the side­walk to give benches, green­ery and pedes­tri­ans more room. The well in the cen­ter of the road would be moved off to one side, and a slightly raised area would be placed in the cen­ter, which would both slow traf­fic and pro­vide a com­mu­nity area for spe­cial events.
