Eastside battery earns top honors
Eastside softball capped another stellar season by racking up several region awards this week. Taylor Causey and Amanda Hawkins took home the region's top honors. Causey was named Pitcher of the Year while Hawkins took home Offensive Player of the Year honors.
The battery mates weren't the only Lady Eagles hon- ored. Infielder Kenya Shakoor and outfielders Bianca Reed and Erin Steele joined Causey and Hawkins on the All-Region First Team. Emily Almand and Savannah Upshaw were selected on the Second Team.
Hawkins led the region in home runs with 11. She also tied the single-season mark set by Catherine Lee in 2007. She also led the region in RBIs with 47 while hitting .412. She hit three home runs in the first two rounds of the Class AAA playoffs to propel Eastside into the Elite Eight for the third straight year.
Causey racked up a region-best 153 strikeouts while posting a 15-9 record during the regular season. She also finished the regular season with a 1.98 ERA. She pitched well in the Elite Eight, yielding just four runs on seven hits while striking out 20 despite posting an 0-2 record.
Shakoor tied for the team lead in hitting with Hawkins with a .412 average. The lone senior on the squad, Shakoor also led the team in triples with four while driving in 26 runs. Steele was Eastside's spark at the top of the order. She led the team in runs scored (37), singles (34) and stolen bases (38). She batted .318 overall. Reed paced the Eastside outfield with 11 assists. After hitting .500 at Columbus during the Elite Eight, she finished with a .322 average for the year.
