East­side bat­tery earns top hon­ors

East­side softball capped an­other stel­lar sea­son by rack­ing up sev­eral re­gion awards this week. Tay­lor Causey and Amanda Hawkins took home the re­gion's top hon­ors. Causey was named Pitcher of the Year while Hawkins took home Of­fen­sive Player of the Year hon­ors.

The bat­tery mates weren't the only Lady Ea­gles hon- ored. In­fielder Kenya Shakoor and out­field­ers Bianca Reed and Erin Steele joined Causey and Hawkins on the All-Re­gion First Team. Emily Al­mand and Sa­van­nah Up­shaw were se­lected on the Sec­ond Team.

Hawkins led the re­gion in home runs with 11. She also tied the sin­gle-sea­son mark set by Cather­ine Lee in 2007. She also led the re­gion in RBIs with 47 while hit­ting .412. She hit three home runs in the first two rounds of the Class AAA play­offs to pro­pel East­side into the Elite Eight for the third straight year.

Causey racked up a re­gion-best 153 strike­outs while post­ing a 15-9 record dur­ing the reg­u­lar sea­son. She also fin­ished the reg­u­lar sea­son with a 1.98 ERA. She pitched well in the Elite Eight, yield­ing just four runs on seven hits while strik­ing out 20 de­spite post­ing an 0-2 record.

Shakoor tied for the team lead in hit­ting with Hawkins with a .412 av­er­age. The lone se­nior on the squad, Shakoor also led the team in triples with four while driv­ing in 26 runs. Steele was East­side's spark at the top of the or­der. She led the team in runs scored (37), sin­gles (34) and stolen bases (38). She bat­ted .318 over­all. Reed paced the East­side out­field with 11 as­sists. Af­ter hit­ting .500 at Colum­bus dur­ing the Elite Eight, she fin­ished with a .322 av­er­age for the year.
