Our friends on Facebook are talking about the appropriate name for the new elementary school on Airport Road. Some want the new school named Palmer-Stone Elementary as the old Palmer-Stone building in Oxford is scheduled to be phased out. See Page 4A for a story to learn more.

Here’s a sampling of what’s being said on Face-

TOWNS: “They should honor the spirit of the school and the people that have made it so wonderful by moving it with those people to the new building. Cousins did that and now when I say I went to Cousins (in the old building) people still know the school I am talking about, but if my husband were to say that he went to Sharp, he would have to clarify that it was a middle school then and not the alternative school like it is today. Don’t leave the good memories of Palmer Stone to deteriorate with the old building for the sake of history & tradition. Let it live on for future generations.”

TERRI KIMBLE: “The City of Oxford voted to request that the board NOT use that name--and instead leave it on the current building. I, personally, would love to see the name move with the students, though. (On the other hand, I’d also love to see a school named for GC Adams and PD Johnson- two great Newton County educators from 100 years ago!)”
