Cook scores final five points, Eastside nips rival Alcovy
Anytime you get two of the three county basketball teams together, you can bet the players are going to leave everything on the floor. Saturday was no different.
Eastside’s girls closed the game with five unanswered points to snatch a 59-57 victory over rival Alcovy to improve to 5-2 all-time against the Lady Tigers.
Alcovy guard Kate Palo led all scorers with 23 points while Alexia Somerset paced Eastside with 15. Megan Tucker also added 15 for the Lady Tigers while Jjade Cook scored 11 for the Lady Eagles.
Eastside controlled the game from the opening tip but had to come from behind to get the win after Alcovy took a 3-point lead with 34 seconds left.
After Lisa Kossally sank one free throw to give the Lady Tigers a 57-54 lead Cook's 3-point play with 17 seconds put Eastside up 57-54 with 57 seconds left to play, Cook went to the line and made both free throws after drawing a foul.
The Lady Tigers had no answer for Cook. After Alcovy was unable to score on its next possession, Cook went the length of the floor and scored a layup and was fouled on the play. She sank the free throw to complete the 3point play to put Eastside up 59-57.
After being outscored by 10 points in the opening quarter, Alcovy chipped away over the final 24 minutes. Eastside led 21-11 after the first quarter and took a 7-point lead into the locker room at halftime.
Palo’s 3-pointer with 35 seconds left in the third pulled Alcovy within two at 41-39. After an Eastside bucket, Kossally hit two free throws to cut the deficit back to two before Eastside drilled a three in the closing seconds of period.
Eastside kept the Lady Tigers at arms length throughout the opening of minutes of the third quarter before Tucker’s three again pulled Alcovy to within two. Alcovy finally captured the lead with less than two minutes to play before Cook and the Lady Eagles responded with five points to close out the game.
