Cook scores fi­nal five points, East­side nips ri­val Al­covy

Any­time you get two of the three county bas­ket­ball teams to­gether, you can bet the play­ers are go­ing to leave ev­ery­thing on the floor. Satur­day was no dif­fer­ent.

East­side’s girls closed the game with five unan­swered points to snatch a 59-57 vic­tory over ri­val Al­covy to im­prove to 5-2 all-time against the Lady Tigers.

Al­covy guard Kate Palo led all scor­ers with 23 points while Alexia Som­er­set paced East­side with 15. Megan Tucker also added 15 for the Lady Tigers while Jjade Cook scored 11 for the Lady Ea­gles.

East­side con­trolled the game from the open­ing tip but had to come from be­hind to get the win af­ter Al­covy took a 3-point lead with 34 sec­onds left.

Af­ter Lisa Kos­sally sank one free throw to give the Lady Tigers a 57-54 lead Cook's 3-point play with 17 sec­onds put East­side up 57-54 with 57 sec­onds left to play, Cook went to the line and made both free throws af­ter draw­ing a foul.

The Lady Tigers had no an­swer for Cook. Af­ter Al­covy was un­able to score on its next pos­ses­sion, Cook went the length of the floor and scored a layup and was fouled on the play. She sank the free throw to com­plete the 3point play to put East­side up 59-57.

Af­ter be­ing outscored by 10 points in the open­ing quar­ter, Al­covy chipped away over the fi­nal 24 min­utes. East­side led 21-11 af­ter the first quar­ter and took a 7-point lead into the locker room at half­time.

Palo’s 3-pointer with 35 sec­onds left in the third pulled Al­covy within two at 41-39. Af­ter an East­side bucket, Kos­sally hit two free throws to cut the deficit back to two be­fore East­side drilled a three in the clos­ing sec­onds of pe­riod.

East­side kept the Lady Tigers at arms length through­out the open­ing of min­utes of the third quar­ter be­fore Tucker’s three again pulled Al­covy to within two. Al­covy fi­nally cap­tured the lead with less than two min­utes to play be­fore Cook and the Lady Ea­gles re­sponded with five points to close out the game.
