A Cov­ing­ton man was ar­rested for dis­charg­ing a firearm in the city af­ter al­legedly fir­ing a gun in the air af­ter an­other driver passed him.

Ac­cord­ing to re­ports by of­fi­cers from the Cov­ing­ton Po­lice Depart­ment, a woman called au­thor­i­ties and told them that she had been trav­el­ing south on Al­covy Road and turned onto Her­ring Street where she got be­hind a sil­ver Grand AM. She said that the driver of that ve­hi­cle turned on his emer­gency flash­ers and be­gan hit­ting the brakes. Af­ter do­ing this sev­eral times, she re­port­edly told of­fi­cers that the car came to a com­plete stop in front of her.

The vic­tim de­cided to go around the Grand AM at which point the pas­sen­ger, later iden­ti­fied as Lazarus Smith, re­port­edly stuck a pis­tol out of the win­dow and fired it into the air. She con­tin­ued driv­ing up Her­ring to the Emory Street in­ter­sec­tion. Dur­ing this time the Grand AM was al­legedly be­hind her and she could see that Smith still had the gun in his hand.

Dur­ing this time the vic­tim was on the phone with 911 op­er­a­tors and of­fi­cers were able to lo­cate the ve­hi­cle on In­ter­state 20 head­ing west. The driver was stopped and Smith was ar­rested and trans­ported to the Newton County De­ten­tion Cen­ter.
