NCSO deputy ar­rested for sim­ple bat­tery

A Newton County Sher­iff's Of­fice deputy was ar­rested in the wee hours of the new year and charged with sim­ple bat­tery un­der the Fam­ily Vi­o­lence Act.

Michael Lewis, 29, was ar­rested around 1: 45 a. m., af­ter deputies an­swered a call about fight. Af­ter speak­ing to sev­eral wit­nesses at the home Lewis was ar­rested and trans­ferred to the Rock­dale County Jail, where he was housed for his safety un­til he posted a $ 500 bond Mon­day. Ac­cord­ing to Newton County Sher­iff’s Of­fice Pub­lic In­for­ma­tion Of­fi­cer, 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell, the in­ves­ti­ga­tion is on­go­ing.

“ Sher­iff [ Ezell] Brown wants to as­sure the pub­lic that this case will be han­dled just like any other,” said Mitchell.

Lewis, who has been with the sher­iff’s of­fice for six years, is cur­rently on ad­min­is­tra­tive leave with pay pend­ing the out­come of an in­ter­nal in­ves­ti­ga­tion by the Of­fice of Pro­fes­sional Stan­dards.
