After 40 years of silence, the Wolverine Gym will again bustle with activity.

The Newton County Recreation Commission in conjunction with the Newton County Board of Commissioners will unveil the renovated Wolverine Gym today in a ceremony at 4:30 p.m.

The Wolverine Gym is the old R.L Cousins High School gym that the school called home until it closed in 1970. The Recreation Commission will manage the facility and it will be open for use by the community.

Architectural firm Richard Wittschiebe Hand headed the rehabilitation process thanks to funding from a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax Allocation and a $250,000 grant from the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation.

Wolverine Gym is located on Geiger Street at the location of the old school. The gym will join Wolverine Field as yet another historical landmark in Newton County. Wolverine field was dedicated in 2009 with many former Cousins players on hand for the celebration.

R.L Cousins closed in 1970 after just 13 years of existence. Thanks to the desegregation of schools in 1971, the students from Cousins attended into Newton County High School.
