Two men found dead, vic­tims of sin­gle car wreck

Two men who had been missing for a week were found dead Satur­day morn­ing, vic­tims of a car wreck on Ga. High­way 11 near Sur­rey Chase Drive.

James Eu­gene Ma­son, 39, from South Carolina, and Robert Michael Dempsey, 34, died af­ter the 1996 Chevro­let Lu­mina they were in went off the road­way and struck a tree be­fore land­ing in a ravine. Ac­cord­ing to Lt. Tyrone Oliver with the Newton County Sher­iff’s Of­fice, the car had been re­ported stolen by Dempsy’s sis­ter on Jan. 1 and both men had been re­ported missing on Jan. 2.

The ve­hi­cle was not found un­til Jan. 8, when two peo­ple look­ing for scrap metal no­ticed parts of the

car in the ravine. Ac­cord­ing to Ge­or­gia State Pa­trol spokesman Gordy Wright, the last con­tact ei­ther man had with fam­ily mem­bers was around 5: 30 a. m. Jan. 1.

An ac­ci­dent re-cre­ation showed that Dempsey was the driver and was thrown from the car. The ve­hi­cle ap­par­ently left the road in a curve, vaulted over a cul­vert, struck a tree and then trav­eled down an em­bank­ment, com­ing to rest up­side down with ex­ten­sive dam­age.
