Alcovy girls top Heritage 51-34, pick up 16th win
The Alcovy girls basketball team traveled to Heritage High School on Saturday to deliver a 5134 spanking and improve their record to 15-2.
Kate Palo dropped 16 points for the Tigers but coach Kidada Holtzclaw felt that it was the Tigers great team play that got them the win. "When you are at the top of the region, you have a bullseye on your back but our team is doing a great job of rising above that", coach Holtzclaw said.
Alcovy began and finished the game with a strong emphasis on defense. The Tigers forced the Patriots into committing 28 turnovers during the game.
With ample amount of opportunities to run their offense in the first half, the Tigers placed the ball in the hands of Ashley Williams to get the team rolling. Williams provides the Tigers with great physical toughness but left late in the game with an injury and didn't return.
"We play a lot of backto-back games so you get nicks and bruises here and there", coach Holtzclaw said. "Ashley (Williams) will be okay. She is tough so she will be ready to go for the next game."
The Tigers ended the first half on a 8-0 run to go into halftime with a 29-20 lead over the Patriots.
that they would continue to play aggressive defense as they held the Patriots to just two points in the third quarter. "We are beginning to understand how to play great defense", coach Holtzclaw said.
The Tigers entered the fourth quarter with a 4022 lead over the Patriots and seemed to have sucked the life out of the Patriots team. Kate Palo's 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter was the final straw for the Patriots. The Tigers continued to pull away to finish the game with a 51-34 victory on the road.
Despite a lot of adversity, the Tigers persevered and will continue to do so. "All season long we have emphasized being able to play through anything. We put the girls through adverse situations in practice so they now know how to play through it all",
coach Holtzclaw said. The Tigers fought through a game that favored the Patriots in regards to foul calls and injuries.
Lisa Kossally and Ashley Williams added 9 points each for Alcovy.
Breanna Mitchell led the way with 12 points for the Patriots.
