A good cause: 11 Alive’s (WXIX TV) 36th an­nual Com­mu­nity Ser­vice Awards hon­ored 10 re­cip­i­ents for 2011. Among those were Op­er­a­tion Sand­box. The award was pre­sented to Vir­ginia Pearson, co­founder of the or­ga­ni­za­tion (cen­ter). The award is pre­sented for out­stand­ing lo­cal vol­un­teers who have demon­strated self­less de­vo­tion for the bet­ter­ment of the com­mu­nity. She was es­corted by re­porter Bill Liss, (left) who served in the Air Force, and Ga. Army Na­tional Guard Col. Andy Hall. Ap­prox­i­mately 500 peo­ple were in at­ten­dance. Seats for the event were $300 each. Pro­ceeds from the night’s event went to Emory’s Alzheimer’s re­search. Ap­prox­i­mately $150,000 was raised for re­search.
