For­mer Ea­gle Smith falls in match play at Pub­lic Links

For­mer East­side and cur­rent Ge­or­gia Col­lege & State Univer­sity golfer Tay­lor Smith was knocked out of the U.S. Ama­teur Pub­lic Links Cham­pi­onship in match play Wed­nes­day af­ter mak­ing it past stroke play in the open­ing round. Smith fell to Her­bie Aikens from Pem­broke, Mass., 4&3.

Smith led the match at the turn af­ter fir­ing a 1-un­der 34 on the front nine at Ban­don Dunes Golf Re­sort in Ban­don, Ore., but con­sec­u­tive bo­geys on No. 10 and 11 put him down one and he was un­able to re­cover.

Smith made the round of 64 match play af­ter shoot­ing con­sec­u­tive 3-over 74s on the par-71 course. Smith also made the U.S. Ama­teur field last year but fin­ished 269th and didn't make it to match play.

Smith made the field by win­ning his qual­i­fier in June when he fired a 7-un­der 137 over two rounds at Wood­mont Golf & Coun­try Club in Can­ton. Smith is a ju­nior at Ge­or­gia Col­lege and had a 75.2 stroke av­er­age in five events in 2010-11.
