Former Eagle Smith falls in match play at Public Links
Former Eastside and current Georgia College & State University golfer Taylor Smith was knocked out of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in match play Wednesday after making it past stroke play in the opening round. Smith fell to Herbie Aikens from Pembroke, Mass., 4&3.
Smith led the match at the turn after firing a 1-under 34 on the front nine at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore., but consecutive bogeys on No. 10 and 11 put him down one and he was unable to recover.
Smith made the round of 64 match play after shooting consecutive 3-over 74s on the par-71 course. Smith also made the U.S. Amateur field last year but finished 269th and didn't make it to match play.
Smith made the field by winning his qualifier in June when he fired a 7-under 137 over two rounds at Woodmont Golf & Country Club in Canton. Smith is a junior at Georgia College and had a 75.2 stroke average in five events in 2010-11.
Former Eastside golfer Taylor Smith qualified for his second national amateur tournament in 2011.
